How to make a Snapchat Geofilter

On-Demand Geofilters are the newest trend to hit snapchat. They have become a staple for any event in 2019. Creating a custom filter for a party is an awesome way to brand a life event and make sharing your experience with friends even more special. They are also a great way for businesses to advertise and get targeted impressions..so how do you make one!?

There a few options available right now..

  1. Hire a freelancer or Geofilter creator company make one for you ($30-$500)

  2. Download Geofilter templates from Snapchat and edit them in Photoshop or Illustrator.

  3. Make your own for $9.99 and launch it using our Geofilter Maker

Sooo.. let’s look at number 3 😉

To make your own Geofilter using the Pepper Filters Geofilter maker is very simple. We grandma tested it during product development... meaning I actually made my grandma customize her own filter. She still has no idea what Snapchat is, but she was able to customize a filter within a few minutes.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. First pick a Geofilter template. You can search by event type – we have filters for Birthdays, Weddings, Events, Trending, and Random.

  2. Then add elements to your filter to customize it and make it more personalized to the event. Get creative.. think of inside jokes, themes, landscapes, etc. You can filter the elements by category as well.

  3. Add additional text or upload your own elements. This step can be useful for businesses or events if you have a logo you want in the Geofilter.

  4. Customize the text fields to your event by adding names, dates, and specific information.

  5. Select the location and time for your filter, pay and launch it!

Choose from beautiful templates, cool texts, stickers and launch your filter using our easy editor!

Submitting to Snapchat

You can either submit the filter yourself (more complicated), or select the location and time right on our site, and we'll submit your filter to Snapchat. Uploading a filter to Snapchat costs anywhere from $5 per 20,000 square feet and goes up from here, depending on the size and duration of your filter. If you use our site to select where and when you want the filter, you can skip the next steps. :)

  1. Visit https://geofilters.snapchat.com/purchase/upload-asset and login using your Snapchat username and password that you use when signing into the Snapchat app.

  2. Choose the filter file you downloaded from us and upload it. (We compress the file for you ahead of time to make sure it’s under the 300KB file size requirement by Snapchat.)

  3. Name your filter and click next

  4. Select the Date you want your filter to run on and click next

  5. Type in the address where you want your filter to run and then select a geofence around the area of your event.

  6. Confirm the time up in the top right corner (sometimes it resets during this step) then click next.

  7. Select ‘filter type’.. If your filter has a business name or logo it you will need to select business filter and then input the name of the business. This won’t affect the price of your filter.

  8. Enter your credit card information

  9. Agree to Snapchat’s terms of service

  10. Submit!

Approval

Your filter still needs to be approved by Snapchat so it’s important that you follow their guidelines to ensure you don’t get rejected!

Here are the top reason filters get rejected:

Snapchat has recently sped up the approval process on filters, sometimes you might hear back regarding the status of your approval within minutes, other times it might take a couple days... But approval is based on priority. So if your filter is set to run tomorrow it will be bumped to the front of the line.

The Surprise

I know from personal experience and from customer feedback, that the surprise can be the most exciting part of a Snapchat Geofilter. After your design is submitted and approved you kick back and wait to unleash your filter on the event! You can think of cool ways to surprise people or just let them discover the filter on their own when they scan through the filters after taking a snap.
